Evaluation Question 8) Our completed thriller opening, and final notes.
*Note that the video does not start until 0.11*.
The song is called 'Routine' due to the fact that its about a man with OCD, living his daily routine, exactly the same, every day. We attempted to emhpasise this when repeating the routine 3 times, making the editing faster, and the clips shorter each time, as well as repeating the music. Not only does the repetition emphasise that he lives a boring, repetetive daily routine, but the gradual increase in pace of the editing starts to build tension, and makes the audience wonder what is going to happen next.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the product? (Evalutation question 7)
What we have learned since the preliminary.
Firstly, i have learned about a new range of technology, that i did not know how to use before we started our Thriller coursework. For example, using technology such as the Sony camera, Sony vegas, or garage band. It was completely new to me, and we had to teach ourselves, and achieve a greater understanding of the technology, to achieve a good peice of coursework.
I have also learned how to gain a deeper understanding, and a more suitable outline of audiences. Whether that be for our Thriller opening, or just films in general. I have learned ways to achieve the appropriate content that we need within our thriller. For example, we used things such as surveymonkey.com and focus groups, that helped us to achieve the thriller that we have now. These things become useful with most types of films, and are used frequently in the media industry, and therefore were very useful to us.
I have learned how to use a range of technology to present my work, instead of typing everything out, with pictures. Before i started my thriller blog, this would of been the method i would of chosen, whereas now, i have been given the oppertunity to learn and use technology such as slideshare and prezi.
Even though it was just our preliminary task, we still had to plan out our storyboards, to give us a rough guideline/story to follow. However, due to the fact that we had only just started the course, aswell as the fact that it was only our preliminary task, they were very simple, and minimal. Throughout the whole thriller course, we slowly learned how to create a more detailed, enhanced storyboard, including more analysis, and the minute details that are easily forgotten about, for example, how long a shot lasts, the background music/sound/noise behind that shot etc.
I have also learned the importance of mise-en-scene within a film, and gained tips of how to use it succesfully and how not to. I did this by looking at ther examples of students work, as well as watching many thriller films, and by researching the subject. For example, our villain in our thriller opening wears a black mask, and black clothing. This is the typical mise-en-scene for a thriller film, and through this, we noticed that this choice of clothing has a massive effect on our thriller opening, due to the fact that wthout it, our storyline, or the basic plot, would not make sense, and would be much less effective.
Along with this, i have learned how to deeply analyse short clips of film, from other thrillers and genres, and have learned how to pick out what makes them effective and what does not. When starting our thriller, we had to watch past students work, along with films such as zodiac and the second coming. Instead of just focusing on the plot of the film (which without doubt is equally as important as the rest of the film), we had to analyse the lighting, sound, camera angles and shots and mise-en-scene and explaining how it relates to tis audience, and the type of genre it is aiming to me. This is something that i find myself regularly doing now when watching all different kinds of films.
Due to the fact that me and the team that i worked in, worked together near enough every day, for a very long time, to perfect (in our opinion), our thriller, it has given me the oppertunity to learn how to become part of a strong, close-knitted team. I learned how to exchange and or excel ideas with other people as well as learning that reliability is an important factor in groupwork such as this.

A prezi, analysing deeper into Evaluatin question 6.
We also forgot to add the fact that we used wordle, and powerpoint presentions in our, 'range of technology section'.

Evaluation question 6) What have i learnt about technology through the process of creating our thriller opening?
We attempted to create a wordle, of the words that described the types of technology i have used during the process of our thriller assignment, however, due to technical problems.
During the process of our Thriller assignment, i used basic technology, such as the IMac computers, Google, Youtube, a digital camera, blogger.com etc, however, i also learned how to use technology such as Final Cut Express, Garage Band, Prezi, Slideshare, and Wordle!

Using Software, technology, and hardware.
Thanks to creating our Thriller, i learned a lot about using different forms of technology. When creating the storyboard, i learned how to use final cut express, due to the fact that we had a lot of editing, and cutting to do with our video, so that it flowed well.
I also learned how to use a digital camera, due to the fact that we had to take pictures of our storyboard, and of the filming we were doing.
I also learned how to use a camera, how to adjust it, so that we created smooth, non-shaky, effective shots.

Visual Analysis.
It is possible to interpret subliminal meanings, and hidden hints to what a film or television show is about, using only a poster, leaflet, or still image.
For example, this image gives the impression that the man is a villain, due to the fact that he is in darker colours, and the fact that the person is in his head, and is in the centre of the screen, suggests that they are controlling him, or is a large part of the film.
The fact that the writing is red, suggests that there will be violence and blood.
The fact that the man is cut in half, suggests that he has two personalities, or two sides to himself.

Evaluation question 5) How did we attract/address our audience?
There are a number of ways in which we held the attention of our audience, primarily by constantly building tension, using repetition and shorter editing.
As previously mentioned, by using surveymonkey, we were able to discover our target audience, and create a character that the younger generation can relate too.
We were pleased with the location of our location, which was in our friend, Laimonas's house, due to the fact that it fit our storyline perfectly. The setting created the right atmosphere of the thriller, that we intended to create.

Evaluation question 4) Who would be the audience for our media product?
Potential Target Audience
We have attempted to make the Thriller suitable for the age of around 15-18, of both genders. This is due to the fact that we asked mainly 16-18 year olds to fill in our surveys, and we asked mainly that age group questions about what would make a good thriller. We also chose this age group, due to the fact that the people acting within the Thriller, are aged between 16-18, making it more appealing to that age. This may effect our outcome, due to the fact that it gives us a very narrow outcome.
How will the project appeal to our age group?
. We have done this by using upbeat, poppy music to give an edgy effect, as well as making it appealing to the 'younger', teenage audience who usually listen to that genre of music.
We gave the Thriller a large amount of suspense, by making it so that the audience know that the murderer is there, before the actual victim does. This appeals to the younger target audience, who tend to get more excited at films containing a lot of suspense and tension.

Evaluation question 3) -What kind of media industry would distribute our film?
There are a variety of different film companies and institutions that may wish to distribute our thriller. Me and my group have researched into the typical companies that distribute typical psychological thrillers, such as the one we have created. These types of companies, are companies such as Summit Entertainment and Universal Studios.
However, because we do not have a full movie, the type of companies/distributors that would want to distribute our films could also beTV companies, that would use it as a short advertisement, or once developed into a full film, could produce it as a television series.
There are many ways our thriller could be advertised, for example, on television, on posters, leaflets and billboards, in cinema's, magazines and newspapers, and also on the internet. By using a larger form of advertisement, it would be possible to attract a larger audience. These methods are used by a number of companies, such as 'The Women In Black', 'The Avengers', and 'The Dark Night'.

We also meet our age group by not using any blood, sexual references, extreme violence or bad language.

We took a survey on what the younger generation thought would make a good thriller, and we put their answers into wordle.

A feminist critic may critisize our video, due to the fact that no females are included. However, the sexuality of the masked villain is not classified, making it possible to be a woman. This contrasts the typical sterotype of women, and of thrillers in general.
In our film, there is a lack of input from a range of ethnical minorities, which we did not take into consideration in our thriller. However, we do not contain any offensive, or racial related actions. Similarly to this, we did not feel that sexuality was relevant to the topic of our thriller.

Creating the IDent.
To start our thriller opening, we needed to create an IDent for our production team. Although we still haven't found a suitable sound to accompany the animation, the actual IDent itself, is complete. We named our production company, 'CCTF'. Each letter stands for the first letter of each persons name.
Firstly, we added a background effect, called 'fog machine', that created an eery effect. Then we added the text that was created with the 'cat eyes' effect. We than created a logo, (that's not visible in the picture), which also fades in with the text. We will later add this into our thriller opening.

Editing and sound.
When editing our Thriller, we came across the problem that one of the sounds, does not sound as suitable to our Thriller as we thought it did, but we think this may be due to the fact that the computer in which we viewed out Thriller on, has different speakers to the computer we edited on, so we decided to leave it.

Graphic Matches
Towards the end of our thriller opening, we use a graphic match for the continuity between the two shots in which the victim is knocked unconscious, and when he wakes up in an unknown place. When the main characters head is slammed against the wall, there is a slight pause as his head rests there, and it then blurs into the same shot, using a black and white blurry technique, but instead of the main characters head being against the wall, he is against another surface, which we then find out is the floor. We do this by changing the angle of the shot, by 90 degrees, once the graphic match has been made, as we feel this is an effective way to put the two shots together, and continue the thriller opening.

Filming Our Thriller- Mise En Scene.
Our thriller contains an ordinary man and a villain. To exxagerate the fact that the villain is actually a villain, we dressed the villain in all black, and made him wear a black mask. We also used black make-up to cover up the gaps in the mask to add extra effect. The character of the ordinary manm wore pyjama bottoms, and no top, to give the audience the idea that he had just got out of bed. The whole opening, is filmed in daylight, which emphasizes the fact that its morning. The house itself was made to look as if the man lives by himself (so no one bumps into the villain or can save the victim). This was done by making sure that only one toothbrush was in the toothbrush holder, one towel in the towel rack, breakfast was only made for one, and the man spent all of his time on his own.
Morning Mise En SceneThriller Animatic + Our revisions from the storyboard plan.
To create a rough basis on what we were going to do for our thriller, we had to create a storyboard. This storyboard would tell us the length of the shots we used, the basis of the shot, and then sound effects and music we used in that shot. We then had to create an animatic of the storyboard, to give a rough basis as to what the film would look like.
Shot 1:
- 6 seconds,
-Camera shot/Framing : Over the shoulder shot, from alarm clock, person laying in background. Maybe use pulling focus, alarm clock in focus first, then pull to focus on the man, as he reaches for the alarm clock. (In our actual thriller opening, we used the over the shoulder shot, but unfortunately couldn't use the change in focus, due to the fact that our camera did not have the correct settings)
-Sounds: Silence at first, then the alarm goes off, and just as the man taps the alarm, the upbeat music starts and the sound of the alarm stops.
Shot 2
-2/3 seconds.
-Camera/Framing: Close Up of feet moving into slippers.
-Sounds: Backing music still plays, and the diegetic sound is hidden. (We kept the background music, but decided to make the diegetic sound audible, otherwise the beginning of the thriller opening looks too much like a music video, and the sound also adds emphasis on the actions).
Shot 3
-3 seconds.
-Camera/Framing: Close up/mid-shot filmed into mirror while the man brushes his teeth.
Sounds: Diegetic sound of man brushing his teeth, background music still playing.
Shot 4
-2 seconds.
-Camera/Framing: Medium shot, angled down, as the man opens the drawer, pulls out a knife, and cuts the apple in front of him. (We did not stick to this angle, due to the fact that it looked unrealistic, so instead, we decided to take a side on angle, placing the camera on the table, so that the audience are at eye level with the apple, in which the main character cuts)
-Sounds: We still hear the background music, and the diegetic sound of the drawer opening and closing, and the apple being cut.
Shot 5
-2 Seconds.
-Camera /Framing: Mid shot of man spraying himself with cologne. (we decided to remove this shot, due to the fact that our thriller opening was reasonably long).
-Sounds: We hear the sound of the cologne being sprayed and the background music. (we removed the sounds, due to the fact that we removed the clip).
Shot 6
-3 seconds
-Camera/Framing- mid/long shot, maybe angled downwards (shot from stairs)
Sound¬es- Man adjusts himself in the mirror, before walking to the right, opening the door, leaving and closing the door behined him. Diegetic sound of door opening/closing included.
shot 1 - 6 is to be repeated twice, getting faster each time, clips being cut shorter each time.
shot 19- (6s)
Camera/Framing- slight over shoulder shot (similar to shot 1). (We decided to change this, to emphasise the fact that the man's daily routine has drastically changed on this particular day that he wakes up)
Sound¬es- alarm clock goes off but is on the other side of the bed, man slams cupboard assuming clock is there, before waking up and looking confused.
shot 20- (5s)
Camera/Framing- Long shot, raised above bed slightly
Sound¬es- man looks around, stops alarms clock, picks it up and stops it, all slow and confused (music has stopped at this time, diegetic sound only from here onwards)
shot 21- (3s)
Camera/Framing- Medium shot
Sound¬es- Man looks at alarm clock, confused. Swings legs to hang off the side of the bed, sounds include squeaking of the bed.
shot 22- (3s)
Camera/Framing- Close up of feet, on ground level.
Sound¬es- Man goes to put feet in slippers, but one is further than expected and he has to find with foot.
shot 23- (4s)
Camera/Framing- Medium shot (similar to shot 3)
Sound¬es- Man brushes teeth. looks round suspiciously, sound of brushing included.
shot 24- (3s)
copy of shot 4
shot 25- (3s)
Camera/Framing- Closeup/medium shot, angled up.
Sound¬es- Man raises knife to identify blood, looks horrified, maybe a gasp included.
shot 26- (4s)
Camera/Framing- Medium shot on eye level
Sound¬es- Man chucks knife back in drawer in panic, starts to back up onto other side, knife banging into the drawer (sound included)
shot 27- (3s)
Camera/Framing- Medium shot, continuation of last shot
Sound¬es- Man carries on backing up, rests hands on side, turns (his right) and rushes off
shot 28- (1s)
Camera/Framing- Medium shot, eye level
Sound¬es- View of man walking off, maybe from behined
shot 29- (4s)
Camera/Framing- Mans feet is followed, camera rolls up from feet to head, medium shot
Sound¬es- Man looks into mirror, see's writing and looks scared. Writing says "you're no.11"
shot 30- (3s)
Camera/Framing- Angle changes to mans right, medium/long shot still
Sound¬es- Man carries on looking in mirror, another man appear in background, man 1 is oblvious to his presence.
shot 31- (2s)
Camera/Framing- Shot filmed as though the mirror was the camera, close up
Sound¬es- Man 2 rises behined man 1, although slightly unfocused. Sharp intake of breath included.
shot 32- (3s)
Camera/Framing- Medium shot, angled down
Sound¬es- Man 1 on floor, blood dripping from back, villain seen holding bloody knife.
shot 33- (6s)
Camera/Framing- Medium shot filmed from behined man 2 (standing behined the body of man 1). Camera rises from shot of feet to shot of face/back of head.
Sound¬es- Man looks into mirror and ticks off underneath the writing. His reflection is seen as well as the shot of the back of head, over the shoulder shot.
Problems when filming- No Tripod and Fake Blood.
When we finally decided a date and time to film our Thriller, we realised that we left both the video camera and the tripod. The camera situation was easily fixed by a friend who offered to lend us his own video camera. However, we still had no tripod, and this is a problem, due to the fact that in the criteria of the film, we had to be able to hold a steady shot. Therefore, we had to create a makeshift tripod, using a washing line and a shoe. Despite its rather odd appearance, it was able to hold both the camera steady, and the the angle of the camera with much more ease than we could of with a handheld shot.
Another problem when it came to filming and mise en scene, was that the fake blood we needed to use to put on the knife, was too fake looking, runny and transparent in colour. To solve this, we had to thicken it, and we used peanut butter. Although probably not the best thing to use, it did thicken it up effectively.

Audience Research.
This is a screenshot of a survey that our group made, to find out some information on the Thriller genre and what people thought about it.
We also carried out a list of different things to give us an idea of what people look for in a Thriller.
After the questionnaire over the internet, we also created a written questionnaire for people who had no access to the internet.
Past Students work.
In class, we looked at examples of former students work, and we analyzed what they did wrong, and what they did right, and from this, we learned what we should and shouldn't do, when making our Thriller.
From doing this exercise, i learned that, contituity editing is completely necessary, and that costume and makeup must be good and realistic, in order to add effect, and the plot and dialogue must be realistic and not too far fetched, due to the lack of technology we have, meaning we cannot make un-realistic things look realistic.

Narrative
In almost all films, the narrative and plot between the characters are the most essential part of the film, and are necessary when making a good movie. If the dialogue is too scripted, and the plot is bad, the audience are led to believing that the film was badly directed and will lost interest in the film. There are specific techniques that directors can use, that make the film a lot more exciting. For example, you could use techniques to make the audience ask questions and wonder what is going on.
Chuck Jones' Rules.
When Chuck Jones began creating the characters and scenarios of The Roadrunner segment of Looney Tunes, he created a set of rules that the creator must abide by. For example, one of the rules was that the coyote may never harm the road runner and the road runner may never harm it, but only mock it by saying 'meep meep'. This is an example of rules in a production.

Sounds...continued.
Unfortunatly, we were unable to find a suitable piece of music for the opening of our thriller, however, we emailed a band called 'The 99's', whom we found from unsigned.com, and asked them to use a song of theirs called 'Oh me, Oh my'.
Thankfully, they gave us permission to use it.
To add tension to our thriller, we used a low frequency bass sound, to emphasise the fact that something is going to happen and to put the audience on edge. This noise happens when the villain walks past the mirror, and when the victim discovers the blood stained knife. This sound was edited onto a programme called 'Fruit Loops' created by using the sound of a 'kick drum', at a lowered pitch.
This is the fruit loops logo.
Here is an example of what the programmes interface looked like.

Risk Assessment
Whilst filming, we have to take precaution with risks, that can take place whilst filming.
One of the main risks when it comes to filming our thriller is, handling sharp objects such as the knife we intend to use, so we will have to take exceptional care in walking with the knife, and handling it.
We will also have to take care, when handling fake blood.... due to the fact that we will have to put blood on the floor, and film a fast paced, tense scene, so we will have to be careful when walking around, with fake blood on the floor.
We do not have to take precaution with the weather, due to the fact that everything will be filmed inside, the only precautions we will have to take, is when it comes to filming at the right parts of the day, so that the lighting is the same.
We had some issues issues when attempting to find a suitable day, in which we could all film, due to the fact that we all have different schedules, but we worked around this by organising a set day, every week, in which none of us will make other plans.

Cliffhangers
Cliffhangers are usual conventions of a thriller, or a series of Thrillers. They often contain a main character in a difficult situation. This can entice the audience to keep watching, or to watch the next film/series, so that they see how the situation resolves. The most commonly used cliffhangers are those in soaps, such as Eastenders, also known as 'duff duffs'. At the end of each episode, the soap is drawn to a close, using a cliffhanger to make sure that the audience are enticed enough to want to continue watching.
Red Herrings.
The 'Red Herring' is a device which intends to divert the audience from the truth of an item of significance. It can work with other devices such as the enigma, which creates suspense. An example of this, is in the film, 'North by Northwest', by Alfred Hitchcock, 1958.
Enigmas
This refers to a puzzle, or problem in a Thriller. This is commonly something which the protagonist has to try to find out or solve before the narrative is resolved.

Children Of Men Analysis.
When watching 'Children Of Men', i noticed that instead of using the typical suspense aspect of the thrilller, the director used the idea of shock instead. The clip consists of a serene like, opening, in which we start to question what is going on, when we find out that the youngest person in the world, (at the age of 18), has died. At this point, the audience start to wonder what is going on, and while the audience are so in depth whilst thinking about the plot of the film, the director cleverly adds a suprise explosion, with no warning, so shock the audience.
Modern Thrillerse; Zodiac.
The film Zodiac, also contains many typical thriller conventions. When watching this film, i began to notice that the film contains the typical 'dark setting'. This puts the audience on edge immediatly, due to the fact that darkness is related to death, pain, violence, and the unknown. In the car scene of the clip, the two characters are dimly lit, which automatically hints to us that something bad is going to happen... this also builds suspense and creates an 'edge of youre seat', kind of tension, due to the fact that the audience doesn't know exactly what is going to happen.
The fact that we never see the face of the murderer, gives the audience the oppertunity to use their imagination and wonder what he/she looks like themself, which also gives the film a touch of suspense, due to the fact that if the audience can tell who the murderer is, they would be able to predict when somebody is about to get killed, however, the audience have to guess and predict themselves who and when somebody is going to get killed.

Modern Thrillers; A History Of Violence.
The film, 'A History Of Violence', contains many of the typical Thriller cliche's that take place in most Thriller films. For example, the main character, and 'bad guy', is sharply dressed in a suit, with a serious expression. This immediatly shows contrast with the guy who he is with, who'se wearing shorts a t-shirt, and makes the main character stand out even more, due to the fact that they are in a desert. There is hardly any dialogue or sound in the beginning of the clip, apart from the sound of crickets croaking, and the wind. The dialogue between both characters, was rather casual, and their calm, relaxed body language hints towards their 'bad guy' characteristics, due to the fact that it gives the audience the impression that they do not care.
The camera work in the movie consists or a farely simple range of close ups, over the shoulder shots, mid shots, and pans. The editing was slow paced, which built suspense and kept the audience wondering what is going on, and what is about to happen.

Mise-en-scene analysis; Jane Eyre Still Image.
The action takes place in a school, dring the day, in the victorian times. This is shown, as the girls are all in uniform, there is daylight coming through the windows and the uniform and settings are old fashioned.
The key figure is the girl who has most focus on her. The light is shining mainly on her, the teacher is looking at her, and the other children are focusing on her.
The girls facial expressions are stern and serious, which adds tension to the atmosphere, and shows that the classroom isn't a nice place to be. The fact that they are all stood in a straight line, gives the scene an army- like feel, which also shows that the scene is a very stern, uncomfortable one.
